I’ve recently discovered the joys and benefits of houseplants and can’t get enough! This winter I’ve decided to declutter and make our apartment as cosy as possible.
I’m bringing the outdoors inside and adding some greenery to beat the winter blues. They don’t just look great on Instagram – there’s benefits of having houseplants around too.
I’ve never been very green fingered but last year I bought a couple of plants – one because it had a pretty flower (that I didn’t expect to last more than a week!) and a chilli plant in an owl plant pot. I’ll confess, I was more interested in the plant pot than the chillies to begin with, but I’ve actually really embraced growing my own. It’s been really rewarding to see the chillies grow and use them in my cooking.
Over the Summer when my anxiety was particularly bad, going for an evening walk really helped. Walking through the local park helped me relax. Now it’s getting dark in the evenings I’ve decided to invest in some houseplants because it’s not as easy to get out.
I don’t know much about houseplants so I went to the garden centre and chose a selection of plants, succulents and cacti. Basically I’m going to water them and hope for the best!
One of the benefits of houseplants is that they purify the air. They increase the amount of oxygen and remove toxins. This can help you relax and sleep better – something which can really help with anxiety.
Research studies have also shown that the benefits of houseplants include reductions in blood pressure levels, improvements in attention span and concentration and reductions in fatigue and headaches – all things which are affected by anxiety.
It sounds like having houseplants around can make us happier and healthier, and I’m definitely already feeling the benefits of houseplants in my cosy new living room. Let’s just hope I can keep them alive long enough to really feel the positive effects.
